À son arrivée à l’université catholique de Paris, le pape Léon XIV s’arrête pour prier sur le site du massacre brutal au monastère des Carmes pendant la Révolution française, marqué par l’expression latine « Hic ceciderunt » (Ici ils tombèrent).
Le 2 septembre 1792, une foule révolutionnaire exécuta sommairement environ 115 prêtres et évêques catholiques, dont beaucoup refusèrent de se soumettre à la Constitution civile du clergé et furent béatifiés par le pape Pie XI en 1926.
